Quick answer: 316L is the default for Technology Cooling System loops — its 2–3% molybdenum content adds chloride and chemistry tolerance that a 20-year coolant loop will eventually need, and many end-client standards mandate it anyway. 304 remains a sound, cost-effective choice for benign facility-water duty. The price gap is real but small against total project cost; the requalification cost of getting it wrong is not.
What actually differs
Both are austenitic stainless steels with excellent weldability and the same passive chromium-oxide surface that keeps coolant clean. The difference is molybdenum: 316L contains 2–3%, 304 contains none. Molybdenum specifically improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in the presence of chlorides — and chlorides are the realistic threat in a cooling loop, arriving via makeup water, cleaning chemicals or coastal-air contamination during construction.
The “L” matters too: low carbon (≤0.03%) protects the weld heat-affected zone from sensitisation, keeping corrosion resistance intact right through orbital-welded joints — relevant on any loop with hundreds of welds.
The decision, loop by loop
- TCS / anything feeding cold plates: 316L. Coolant chemistry evolves over a facility’s life (new inhibitor packages, biocide regimes, water-quality drift); 316L absorbs that evolution without requalification. Check the end client’s basis of design — many simply specify it.
- FWS / plant-side loops: 304 is often fine, especially on closed treated loops. Go 316L if the water source is chloride-rich or the loop serves heat-reuse duty at sustained higher temperatures.

The false economy to avoid
Mixing grades to shave cost creates two welding procedures, two spares inventories and a certification pack that needs a legend. On most projects the clean answer — 316L throughout the technology side — costs less in total than the complexity it removes.
