However, where coolant chemistry, water quality or a 20-year-plus design life with high chlorides, aggressive biocide regimes, heat re-use circuits with elevated temperatures can all create a challenging environment. Choosing the right grade

GradeWhen to specify it
304 / 1.4301Benign treated-water and glycol loops, cost-optimised for service water duty.
316L / 1.4404This composition makes it ideal for use in demanding environments, such as the chemical and pharma industry. 316L belongs to the austenitic class of stainless steels, which are known for their excellent toughness, weldability, grindability and non-magnetic properties.
904L/ 1.4539The material 1.4539 is an austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent corrosion resistance in extremely aggressive environments
6Moly/ 1.4529The material 1.4529 is a highly alloyed, austenitic stainless-steel grade often referred to as a “super austenitic” steel.
Alloy 22/ 2.4602The material 2.4602, also known as Alloy 22, is a highly corrosion-resistant nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy. This alloy is characterized by excellent resistance to both oxidizing and reducing chemical environments, making it particularly well-suited for extreme conditions such as acid processes in the chemical industry.

Frequently asked questions

Is 304 ever wrong for a coolant loop?

It’s fine for benign duty, but many end-client standards simply mandate 316L for TCS (Technology System Cooling) — check the basis of design before value-engineering the grade.

Do glycol coolants attack stainless?

No — propylene glycol itself is benign; it’s the water quality, chlorides and additive package that drive grade selection.

Can you advise on grade selection?
