The squeeze, from where we stand
Every quarter brings more announced AI capacity, and nearly all of it is liquid-cooled from day one. The specialist supply chain — coolant loops, valves, hygienic tube, qualified orbital welders — is scaling fast, but demand is scaling faster. We see it directly: enquiry volumes for data centre projects have accelerated sharply, and the projects themselves are larger, with 8″ distribution mains and hundreds of valve positions per hall.
Where programmes actually slip
Not usually on the headline equipment. The pattern we see is the fit-out phase discovering that “standard” items aren’t standard anymore: a specific valve size out of stock market-wide, tube in the right finish on a long mill lead, gaskets in the specified elastomer unavailable — each individually small, collectively a stalled fabrication team on a site burning money by the day.
What early engagement changes
- Reservation beats reaction. Share the programme and take-off at design stage and a stockholder can ring-fence material against your dates — long before a purchase order exists.
- Specification help is free at design stage. Grade, finish, seat material, flange pattern: settled early, these are choices; settled late, they’re change orders.
- Kitting compresses site logistics. Picked-to-isometric packages keep fabricators welding instead of counting fittings.
- Stock depth absorbs change. Design iterates; a supplier holding 1,800 tonnes across 6,500+ lines absorbs a size change that would restart a mill order.
